Abandoned Railroad Undergoes Transformation
It takes vision to see possibilities that others cannot see. When the client acquired an 11-mile abandoned railroad corridor in Cumberland Valley, the goal was twofold: (1) develop the former railroad into a first-class recreation trail for hikers and cyclists, with a separate facility for equestrians, and (2) preserve a historical transportation corridor. The project presented significant design challenges and safety concerns, plus the challenge of acquiring the necessary professional and financial resources to make it a reality. RETTEW developed a master plan and, from that plan, prepared an innovative and cost-effective solution. Today, the trail promotes physical activity and wellbeing as well as a greater sense of connectivity among the communities in the region.
